Namsai is the headquarters of Namsai district and a major centre of Tai Khamti culture in eastern Arunachal Pradesh. Buddhist pagodas, monasteries, cultivated plains and riverine landscapes distinguish the lowland district from the higher Himalayan regions farther north. The town is also the practical base for visiting Golden Pagoda, Chongkham and other cultural sites across the district.
