About the place
The feeling of Tawang Monastery
Tawang Monastery, founded in the seventeenth century, is India’s largest Buddhist monastery and one of the most important Gelug institutions outside Tibet. The complex overlooks the Tawang Chu valley and contains prayer halls, scriptures, religious art and monastic residences. Its scale, living spiritual traditions and connection with Monpa culture make it one of Arunachal Pradesh’s defining heritage sites.
