About the place
Thangu lies about 30 kilometres north of Lachen in Mangan district and serves as an acclimatisation stop before journeys toward Gurudongmar Lake. Alpine meadows, wooden houses, army camps and streams including the Thangu Chu shape the high valley. Snow covers the landscape for much of the year, while late spring brings alpine vegetation and a markedly different character.
